Eheim 2028 for my Discus? junkyard4000 03-10-2005

I have 10 Discus in a 75 gal tank.

I'm currently running 2 Filstar XP3 filters (I had 12 discus before...
two of which died several months ago, that's why I have 2 filters...
it's an overloaded tank.)

The XP3s are breaking down and are no longer filtering properly after 2
years. Water in the tank is constantly cloudy, my fine filter pad is
not getting dirty, so I know it's not pumping water properly through
the filter.

My discus are stressed, they're scared all the time now, getting
scratched up from scraping themselves on the log from swimming so
fast... I think it's due to the water quality...

So I am in the market for another canister filter.

I don't really like my XP3s, I'm thinking of replacing them w/ one
Eheim 2028.

Can someone help me... Is an Eheim 2028 all that cracked up to be? Is
it as reliable as people say it is? Will it be slightly easier to
maintain than an XP3?

Thanks in advance.

I'd go for the Eheim Professional 2227 Wet/Dry Canister Filter myself.
They're designed to go a long time without cleaning and work extremely
well to clean water. It's like having a trickle filter without the
sump. They are efficient enough biofilters that saltwater aquarists use
them.

Would the 2227 be overkill? As I understand it, the 2227 is for aquariums up
to 350 litres. Would 2 x 2232 / 4's (one for bio and the other for
polishing) be
a good alternative?

you can never go wrong with over-filtering

Until you plaster your fish against the sides of the tank, that is. ;-)
But I think the 2227 is actually fairly low GPH and you definately
can't have too much bio filter capacity.
