Well my Angel fry have been free swimming for a couple days now.
There's only about 7 or so in the tank. I wasn't able to save many
from one of the other males in the main tank where they were laid (I
was actually on the way home with another tank so the pair could be
moved!). About 60 were left, and many of those weren't fertilized. It
was that male's first spawn and the female's second. She spawned with
a different male this time and the original male did NOT like it one
bit.
It was quite obvious he was very upset about the whole thing.
I'm not surprised that there weren't many fertilized. The original
male gave them such crap during the spawn.
Anyway, the little swimmers are having a blast crusing around the fry
tank.
I'm feeding Hikari's First Bites and Hikari's baby brine shrimp. BOY
is that stuff expensive!
Petsmart didn't have any of the small flat packs of baby brine and
only had the cubed form. That was almost $7! It's not that much either
(1.75 oz.).
So I shave a little off of the cube and feed them that way.
As usual they go for the baby brine really well....just like little
angel babies always do, hehe.

Mother is a Silver Pearlscale and father is a gold / marble half
Pearlscale.
I believe I read an article on breeding Pearls that you have to have
both pearls to get pearls, so we'll see what I get.
I would tend to think that since one parent was half pearlscale that
at least a small % would be. But of course I have NO clue, as I'm not
good at all with genetics.
It's so funny because in my extended family I'M the critter person. I
always have been, even as a small child they would always come to me
with a Q about what's that type of bird Kel, or what kind of creature
looks like this, etc....and it's my sis (Biology teacher) who has
tried to explain genetics to me....but I just sit there like a deer in
the headlights....=3D )~ LOL

I believe I read an article on breeding Pearls that you have to have

That would make pearling a recessive trait. Lets assume we don't KNOW for
sure.

I would tend to think that since one parent was half pearlscale that
at least a small % would be.

OK... so 75% of the scale-type genes are for pearling. If I remember what
I read about genetics, if recessive, you should get 75% pearls (with pearled
scales) and 25% non-pearls (no pearls showing) in the 1st generation (but
carrying the pearl trait recessively/hidden). If pearling is dominant,
100% will show pearling (have pearled scales) but 25% will carry the
non-pearl gene recessively. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. If you breed
sister to brother that ratio/mix will change... then it starts getting
complicated if it's a recessive trait. Example... a sister and brother not
showing pearls but carrying it recessively will produce 50% pearled fry, 25%
non-pearled fry but carrying it recessively, and 25% not carrying the pearl
gene at all.

It's not really that hard to learn. Some authors are better at explaining
genetics and inheritance than others.

Crappy news!
I'm thinking *I* did a really stupid thing.
I added some Malaysian Trumpet snails to the fry tank for some extra
clean up, thinking that would be a good thing.
Nope. At midnight when I went to bed I checked on the little swimmers
and all were fine.
7 am...not one. No bodies, nothing.
I'm thinking it's possible that the snails came apon the sleeping fry
(which bed down for the night) and ate them.
Die offs are a normal thing with fry, but all of them within 7 hours
is just a little too much for me. If it were a total die off I would
have thought there would have been some floaters up in the riccia or
at least stuck to the sponge filter. There are only 4 - small....like
maybe 1/2 inch long snails in there and as scattered as they always
are, I doubt they would have been able to find and eat every baby had
it died over night.
Also, I have never added MTsnails to a fry tank before.
What a bummer. However, I do have a cycled fry tank going for the next
batch, along with tons of food.
