OK, I looked them up. They're crowns and deltas. ;-) The deltas are the
ones selling for $12.99. The crowns are half that where I live. The
regular bettas run $3.99 these days, the females $1.99.

The local Petco here has some rare bettas . The wife and I was looking
at them today. There are updside down fuzzys, all over fuzzies, and
half fuzzies, finless fuzzies and the new color bleached out and
fuzzy...Out of a total of 29 contianers of Bettas both crowns, males
and females, there was a grand total of 21 dead betta, with the
remaining 8 in pityfull condition.But , and I repeat.BUT the lcerk
said no problem as they are getting more in on Thursday if there was
none there that suited us today.....Some one really needs to burn that
Petco manager big time along with Petco for allowing such crap as
thjis to happen. SOmetimes its worst than Wally World when it comes to
fuzzy upside down and half there fish. I just love it when yu ask
them if they ever check the tanks and they say yea,k they check em
all day long........yet there is dead half eaten bodies inthere all
the time............I guess the correct question in stead of checking
the tanks is do yuou ever clean the dead and sick bodies out of the
tanks or just olet them there to create new breeds and provide
nutrition to the other tank residents.

That's truly sad.
I hope you guys pointed out all the corpses to the manager before
leaving.
You should (if you haven't already) email the corp's customer service
at PetCo.com.
Explain what you saw and when.
They *do* get in touch with the store's manager about any problems a
customer has with a certain PetCo.
I know this for a fact, as I've been contaced more than once about an
email to the corp. regarding the conditions of their male Bettas, and
a complete moron of an employee giving out really BAD info to clueless
- newbie customer.
The conditions of the betta containers were in better shape after I
spoke with the head manager via phone.
The company had changed from tiny cups to larger containers - almost
twice the size of the original tiny cups they were in.
This store didn't have the shelf space to house all the males on the
*Betta Shelf* in the bigger containers.
Mind you, these larger containers are still very small anyway.
Again, I emailed the corp and in no time they were in their larger
containers, and magically another shelf appeared. Poof! Room to house
them all.
The other time was regarding what I had over heard an employee telling
a customer.
The next time I was in he was again helping customers, but instead of
bullcrappying them about something he didn't know, he said,"Hold
on....let me get somebody who would know the answer to that."
Sometimes with only a little effort on the customers part, changes for
the better can happen.
You just have to let the right person know what's going on.

I did this constantly with Wal*Mart before they closed the live fish dept.
I would constantly call the store, then the district manager in Nashville.
I called them to report the horrid conditions of all the fish. Seldom was
anything done and any changes were always temporary. In the one store I
can't recall every going there and not seeing fish covered with ich and dead
furry ones stuck to the filter intakes or rotting on the bottom. When they
closed that dept. I was thrilled out of my mind.

And then you have to keep checking back as they change employees constantly.

This was the situation at 3 local Walmart stores in the surrounding
towns.
They were disgusting, all of them. No one knew anything about fish,
and before 1 of the stores became fish only, they did horrid things to
the Hamsters. That same store also did things like put an entire
shipment of male Bettas into one tank because...and I quote the pet
dept. manager whom I was complaining to......"If you put a bunch of
them into the same tank, they don't fight."
He said this as several males were ripping each other's fins apart. I
pointed to chaos and said "Like that, right?"
I called for the store manager, and explained what this idiot is doing
with the male Bettas (weekly!), and that he even started to yell at me
when I insisted that they be put into separate tanks, etc etc...the
store manager turns to the pet dept. manager who is all steamed up at
me, gets told off good by the head manager because he knew that you
don't ever put male Bettas together and why and on and on (It was
great to witness that after a couple weeks of this guy doing it), and
how they needed to be put into separate tanks right away....the next
week all the males were in different tanks, none with Goldfish, and
the idiot king was no longer the pet dept. manager. He was moved to a
different part of the store.
The store manager must have looked into this guy's background in the
department a little closer. A while before this was happening with the
bettas, they were with holding food and water from all the hamsters
and piggies. The reason I was told by employees was that they don't
mess the cages up so much (pee and poo). They also kept the males and
female mixed in together, as well as way too many per cage. The
conditions were cruel.
The store manager wasn't there, niether was the department manager,
and since no body in authority was available to speak to, I had to
call the 800# and explain this to customer service.
I went there later the next evening and they were all gone.
All the birds, all the hammies, and piggies too.
Just fish now.
They have no business dealing with pets anyway, just supplies.
The other Walmart, which was a fish only store from the time they
opened a couple yrs ago, never figured out how to take any sort of
care of fish, or the filtration system, how to *not* gobs of food per
tank, why not to turn off the filters, why you should remove the dead,
and how to clean those cups the male Bettas are in. An inch of brown
water is never a good thing.
A few weeks ago they took down their fish tanks. YEA!!!
No fish at all, not even Bettas in little cups anymore.

I have had (usually no luck when dealing with Walmart's customer
service, except that one terrible store's head manager.
If that particular guy was on duty or got the message about the
situation, it was handled right away.
Any other human in charge in that same store never did anything.
PetCo online complaints seem to get taken seriously when you give them
contact infoformation.
The times when I left my info, it got handled. I could opt for a call
back or not. Sometimes I did, but mostly not.
Being that I'm able to check the local stores weekly for their stock,
I see changes right away.

The last time I was in one of the local PetCo's I tried to alert the
clerk that they had a double rayed crown tail female in a male's
container...and were charging a male's CT's prive (much higher).
The females are all the same cost, no matter the fin type, but male
CT's are more than the veils.
The lady took it to the back room and came back and said,
"Nope....it's a male."
I explained to her that I was a long time breeder, and I'm 100%
positive that that fish is a female , double rayed - crown tail. It's
also has an obvious egg tube showing"...as I point to the egg tube....
She then goes on with her chin up (for real, like snobby) and said
"Well my fish expert says it's a male."
I chuckled and told her "Tell your fish "expert" that male Bettas
don't have obvious egg tubes." =3D )~
I just hope she did tell her "expert" what I said, because maybe then
they would look and see that yes....there is something there and
learn.
