Don't NEED sponges can also use those shower scrubbers and nylon pot
scrubber.
Have also had lots of success with the large rectangle 'squeegy' mop
sponges.
Lots of types, hold up in water, no chemicals leak, no ph change..... to
get good sponges you have to look at mass produced things. Cleaning is
bigger than aquariums. They have the buy power. Go check out a cleaner
suppliers place. I have scored some great filter media before. If I'm ever
worried I soak it for ages and test test test.
You always find something in the end. Just need to look at who really buys
most if the sponges made.
If it's a soft bubble filtration you could get away with a new car wash
sponge, even if ya did have to stab holes in it. But over an intake it would
clog (try to get open cell/pore at least) and slow very quick.
I'd probably just buy an 'otto' powerhead filter cup. In most cases it will
fit right on after you remove the filters uptake grill. If it doesn't wedge
in (holes too big) some zig-zagged airline tubing and it soon will.
For fry I think the easier thing to do is get an air powered sponge filter.
Dirt cheap and once established very fry friendly. Elastic band some cycled
media from another filter to the sponges and you will be good to go in no
time!
Good luck not spending money! a penny saved is a penny more to spend on
fish.
