So, I finally got the 304 set up and running again. It worked great.
I was all set to order a spray bar for it.

And then....

Seems I plugged it into an outlet that is controlled by a light
switch. I turned the lights off at night, and the 304. It should not
have been a big deal, but I woke up to a pretty nasty puddle on the
floor, and my water level down about 2 inches.

Not a massive leak, but still not what I want.

So, any idea what would make a Canister filter leak when off, but not
leak when on?

The seals dried out. When storing coat the seals with Vaseline so they
do not dry out.

Wouldn't dried out seals also leak when running under pressure? And
which specific seals? The main o-ring between the lid and the canister?
Should I use Vaseline when assembling it?

To be honest, I just decided to go with an Aquaclear 300. Picked one up
today. I'll probably sell the Fluval.

If anyone is curious, www.petsplususa.com has Aquaclears at disgustingly
cheap prices. I got a 300 (now called a 70) for $34.99! Best part was
they had a retail location near me, so I got to buy it and come home with
it.

Hi Andy

They tend to leak less when running as most (if not all) canister filters
are under vacuum and not under pressure..... All the ones I ever had pump
out of the canister, not into it.......

Cheers

Ok, you got me there. :-)

Either way, the 300 is where I am staying. If anyone wants to buy a
used Fluval 304, let me know.
