Can anyone tell me what will make the PH drop from 7.6 to 6.0 in 2 hours or
so after a complete water change. No fish are in this tank right now so a
full break down is about to happen if I could find out why this tank is
dropping the PH so damn bad

Were you measuring the ph of the water before it wa added to the
tank? Usually one major reason is there is no buffers present to hold
a ph. Is this a new and as of yet uncycled tank..........if so its not
uncommon for ph to go up or down during the cycle. Was your ph of 7.6
what was in the tank initially, and what was the ph of the water you
added.......

The tank is new to me but all of the equipment came from my 5 year running
29gal that I moved to my new house.
The Ph tested 7.6 from the tap.
After the fill it dropped to around 7.2 -7.0 but after about 2 hours it did
a nose dive to 6 or less my test only shows a 6 min.
I have been into this for 22 years and this is the first time I have ever
had this problem.
But would softened water do this because the buffers are gone?
I haven't had soft water before and the condo complex I think softens all
water coming in.
Tonight I added sodium carbonate and so far it has stayed stable at 7.0 I
hope this will keep it there.
This experience cost me allot of my great fish (all of them within 4 days)
including a matched pair of angles.

so any help would be great

thanks
Dave
