I thought of it because of the way the feral species of snail are
distributed around here.
Go much further south and no jap snails. So yea tough though they might be
they don't hack the cold so well.
Another technique is to bleach everything and then nuetralise after rinsing
with de-chlorinator. But thats messy.
Using the salad traps ya never get every one of the bastards and loaches (yo
yo or clown) will never get all the malaysian cones either (effective
against rams and pond tho).
Because they are drawn to fishfood and cover it I suspect the young snails
may be able to survive a trip thru a fishes digestive system. May sound
strange but these things can surivive in dry gravel for many a month so not
too far fetched. Another thing is that because they are sneaky you could
have had them for months and not known. :)
Freeze/boil your gravel.... only way to be sure.
Why are they bad? well there is only one real reason I dislike them and that
is that they can shelter and breed digenetic trematode species. Without
checking the occasional (sacrifical) snail under a scope you will never know
they are infested. Fish that eat snails should also be wormed if they start
getting skinny. Knock out the snails and the bastard worm creatures in many
cases can't breed.
Some nasty worms out there.
