Unsatisfied with the customer service rep (via phone) telling me *No,
they haven't changed the type of acrylic", and seeing 2 very different
types on my kitchen table, I emailed Marineland. I told them what I
was told, as well as what I was seeing.
I received an email from the company saying *Yes, they did change it
several years ago".
That had to be after 2004, because I have an older tank made in '04,
as well just purchased a new system 6 made in 04, that's the older
type (polycarbonate).
The new type is polystyrene. This is what I called "hard" plastic, and
the polycarbonate the "soft" type.
If folks buying these new tanks never had the polycarbonate type, they
wouldn't know that they've changed.
I was told that the change was to keep manufacturing costs down.
Well, that may be. However, the quality has gone down as well.
Polystyrene scratches SO easily it's ridiculous.
I truly can't believe they made this change. The purchase price
certainly didn't go down.
The rep thought that the newer version I got was probably defective,
and that he wanted to send me a new one to restore my faith in these
systems.
I accepted the offer, but doubt it was from a defect but it is
possible. Apparently the temp when molding it can make a difference.
The waviness I spoke of on the sides can be because of the wrong temp
when molding them.
So I'll give it a chance. I was told it should take a week, and
that'll be around the 1-22 and 1-23-09.

==============================================
Isn't Polystyrene the one that dry-cracks after a few years? It starts
looking like cracking ice, gets brittle and starts to leak. I hope you're
pleased with the new one when you get it. :-)

I think I'll just stick with glass tanks.

I don't know if what you're describing is a characteristic of
polystyrene or not. However, acrylic tanks have their purpose.
It's the quality of the acrylic that makes the difference.
Look at how many expensive marine tanks are made from acrylic.
You can bash an acrylic tank and it end up with a little scratch that
can be removed with a kit.
However, bash a glass tank and that's all she wrote. You're left with
trying to save flopping fish on the floor and a lot of water damage.
The weight difference is incredible as well.
There are pros and cons with both.
However, it seems with the current economy all companies are cutting
costs any which way they can.
It's up to us customers to put our foot down and say we won't stand
for this change.

This is true. Fortunately I never bashed a glass tank. I remember a 30g
that split down the side and flooded the floor taking down parts of the
ceiling in the basement. It was one of those old Metaframe tanks. There was
still about an inch of water over the gravel so no fish were lost. I got to
work late that morning. I've had several bad dreams that one of the 55gs
split or cracked and I was trying to save fish all over the sun room floor!
:-(

If enough people complain they may listen and go back to products of better
quality. BTW, I used Formalin for treat the mollies this time and they look
good. I also added 2 heaping Tbsp's of sea salt (from PetsMart) to the tank
in addition to the regular uniodized salt I added the week before.

Well they sent me 2 new polystyrene tanks.
Both were scratched, and the sides were all wavy.
I emailed the customer service guy that I've been corresponding with
and hope I'll have an email back from him Monday.
