How about not using tap water to avoid the complications all together?
I use a base of distilled water then add spring water to adjust pH and
mineral levels. I never use tap (even to drink) as there is just too
much crap in there. Additives to remove the chlorine, metals, etc are
said to not affect the fish, but I think that's BS. My fish have always
been healthy and disease free with non-poluted H2O. I also keep planted
tanks and I have noticed that many plants die quickly with treated tap.
