I think the biggest reason to sex em and separate thenm is that they
can breed at about 6 or so weeks of age. And they are like guppies in
that once they are bred, they can have broods of fry every 28-30 days
for up top 6 months of time without further need for repeat matings
with a male. I know with guppies folks that are big time serious with
breeding rthem will separate them as soon as possible, as 6 months to
raise up a female that was a choice pick and have to wait for her to
get rid of allthe sperm from that rogue guppy male just so you can
starat on yuor own strain of guppies is a long time to wait and lots
can go crazy with the female during that time too. Serious breeders
want pure virgin females. I don't think I would be that worried with
platys etc but to each their own ....I did find that most big box
stores around here anymore at least no longer carry a lot of the
female fish. Is it because they take up the same space and feed and
care requirements as a male does but do not sell well due to the usual
lack of colorationand brightness or is it they are afraid folks will
breed and give / sell fish and cut them out of a 10 cent profit! I
have been looking to buy a female flame gourami for some time now, and
only wished I bought more when I bought trhe ones I have now.
