I could not believe it, but two days ago my red capped oranda had a
black thing sticking out of his mouth, would go into a corner and stay
there for hours, spit some of the thing out, then suck it back in. I
watched for a day or so, then decided he was really getting upset, so I
boiled a tweezer, slopped slime coat all over my hand, brought him to
the surface and tweezed out the black thing. It was a HUGE black ant!

He seems fine now. I think.

Goodness!

Was the ant dead or alive when you removed it?
Drowned I imagine?

I'm not familiar with "slime coat". Is this a product to protect the
fish when it has to be handled? Would just wearing latex gloves work?

Hi, Katra.
Well, yeah, the ant died - probaby did drown - it was in the tank for at
least 2 days.

I put NovAqua slime coat conditioner on my hand. It feels "slippery"
and protects the fish's scales from injury. Don't know if latex gloves
would work - they are kinda dry I think. I cannot remember where I saw
it, but someone who breeds fancy goldfish never uses a net -- they
always get their fish out with their hands, preferably coated with
NovAqua or a similar product. Said that nets do extensive damage to
long fancy fins. It made sense to me, which was why I had stopped
netting my bettas -- so I stopped netting goldies too.

Thanks!
Makes sense...
I'd have more control over a struggling fish in my hands than in a net.
I imagine it'd be easier on the scales as well.
