I'm in trouble and hope someone here can help me. About six weeks ago I
decided to acquire some goldfish. I bought all new equiment.. And then the
goldfish. Bought them from a place that sells nothing but fish and aquarium
equipment.

They swore that their fish were healthy and they certainly looked healthy.
Took them home and put them in the aquarium. Next morning they were covered
with ick. Within a day or two their tails were shredded with fin rot. One
poor little fish has almost no tail now.

I immediately began treatment for both problems. The ick is long gone but I
keep treating them for fin rot. Get rid of it and it comes right back. I
keep changing the water so don't see how it could be a build of ammonia,
nitrites or things like that.

Yesterday I changed half the water. A test showed it was in terrible shape.
Before I put new water in I tested the new water. Looked perfect almost.
Put it in the tank. The tank was beaufully clear.

The water started to look cloudy again within hours and I tested it again.
Bad already. And it has taken on a green tint.

And the fin rot is still there.

I used to raise tropical fish. Had over 20 tanks and never had this
trouble. What is going on here. Could anyone tell me? I am planning to
take all the plants out of the tank and the gravel and wash everything
thoroughly.

I don't understand this at all.

Without knowing, I'd say too many fish in too small a tank, too soon.
How big are the fish? How big is the tank?

Plan on doing lots of heavy water changes until the filters get
established.

Why are you sorry? Don't be! You asked a perfectly acceptable question
Charles response was valid too. If you don't ask, you don't learn!

What is your water source? Have you recently moved? Are you now using well
water? Is it a new well? Did you buy the plants at the same time you
bought the equipment?
