Hi there LuAnn.

You can't leave the lights on during the night because fish need a
day / night cycle just like humans do.
Fish go into sleep mode when it's dark. When the lights are on all the
time they think it's time to be up and hunting for food.
It's puts a lot of stress on their bodies when the lights are left on
all night.
