I am about to order a chiller for my reef. I would like to know the
mechanics of a chiller, basically do I need an additional pump in order
for the water to circulate or does the chiller contain a pump for it?

a chiller is a refrigerator except the water goes through tubing rather than
the cooling part chilling air that is circulated into a box. you have to
provide the pump to move the water through it.

I have never seen a chiller with a built-in pump. I recently
redesigned my chiller circuit with one end coming from a tube at a
level inside the tank just a little lower than the overflow box, and
the other end to the sump. It has a pump which pumps from the sump to
the pipe in the aquarium (pumps against gravity). In the event that
the chiller pump fails, as long as the main pump is working, water flow
through the chiller circuit will simply reverse, flowing via gravity
from the tank into the sump, and continue to supply water to the
chiller.
