You should take it back to the store, and explain what's
going on.

Absolutely, they should never lose siphon.
I've shut mine off for hours and it's never been a problem...knock on
wood...oops !
Why do I get the feeling I should have never made that claim : )

The easy way to keep bubbles out of your overflow tubes and to restart the
siphon for me has been a small powerhead. Most of the smaller powerheads
have a hose and an inlet to add air to the flow, kind of a cheap venturi. I
drill the top of the overflow tube and silicone the hose from the powerhead
into the hole and attach the other end to the powerhead. The powerhead
continually runs adding circulation to the tank and keeps all the bubbles
sucked out of the overflow tubes automatically.

I say the best way to prevent this is buy a drill bit and make a tap in
your glass or acrylic. Buy a 8.00 bulk head and be done with the
overflow.!

You would still be best if you also glued in an overflow
box to go with that bulkhead.

You would at least need some kind of prefilter. One could
use the prefilter that comes with the bulkhead kits, but
an overflow box for the bulkhead would be better.
