How big do individual polyps get on green button polyps (zoanthus
polchellus)? I got it 2 weeks ago and the largest polyp was about 1/4 inch
across. Most are now about 1/2 inch across. At this pace they will grow
out of my tank and take over my living room before too long ; ). I know
there has to be a maximum size.

I have 3 different color variations, all are approxamately 1/2" in
diameter, and show no signs of getting larger. Your polyps were most
likely just not opening fully yet. Once they adjusted to your tank,
they opened to their full size. However, read on:
A aquarist friend of mine spent some time in Germany recently. He
discovered a difference between most German fishkeepers and Most USA
fishkeepers. In the US, button polyps are often kept in reef tanks,
and many strive to collect every color variation they can lay their
hands on.
In Germany, the "pest anemones' as they were commonly referred to
as, were shunned, being classified along with aiptasia. The reason
for this is their tendancy to spread. You take a small bit of LR with
2 polyps on it, place in on a nice spot in your tank, and they will
multiply. I bought a orangegreen colony that consisted od 8-10
polyps a month ago, that colony is now about 70 strong. They're tough
to kill too, I have had a couple colonies pop up in new location
where I didn't want them, and I had a hell of a time removing them.

you rotten jammy sod. I cannot for the live of me get these to take on in my
tank. I have 30kg of live rock in a 40G tank with 4 powerheads for flow, 2x
actinic 36" tubes (marine blue) and a 150W MH. my sump has three chambers
of media, one with calerpa and a prizm skimmer. nitrates are a bit hard to
control but the other parameters are all within normal limits and the green
buttons refuse to open or even die off. they remain permanently closed.
What am I doing wrong. my tank dimensions are 36"x18"x15" with a
36"x15"x12" sump and a Rio 1700 return pump.
I am currently awaiting the arrival of a turboflotor skimmer to clear up the
debris and OR6500 return pump.
HELP.

30kg of rock? in a 40g tank? Is there ROOM? Thats'....almost 70lbs!
Typo?
Lose the filtration media, let the Live Rock do the work. Getting a
better skimmer will help big-time. I have a 75 gallon with 70lbs LR,
and so little nitrates that macroalgae won't grow. I'm probably
overskimming with the Euroreef, I've been dialing it down the last
couple days.
The light may be too intense, 150W of Halide plus the actinics may be
too much for a 40g tank, but I'll let a light expert comment more on
that.
And tell this ignorant American wtf a 'jammy sod' is?
