REFUGIUM QUESTIONS Russ J. 04-17-2005

Hello All,

I just set up a refugium ( 18") on my 75 gallon FO tank. I have other
filtration also. I bought a handful of Cheato and placed in about 1" of my
existing sand from the tank. I imported some amphipods living in my Emperor
400 filter. My question is this: I bought a 19 watt 6500K flourescent screw
base lamp( equivalent of a 75 watt lamp) and put it in a clamp on holder to
focus on the refugium. Is the K and wattage of the lamp sufficient or too
much? Should it be on 24/7? It's only about a 3 gallon refugium. 18"x4"x
12".?

That light should be fine. My 20 gallon sump used to have a PC strip
light, but it was required elsewhere. I now have a compact
flourescent bulb (the kind you might have in your living room lamp)
and all is well. As an aside, I have never been able to get chaeto to
grow in my tanks, though I don't think it's the light, it wouldn't
grow under the PC either. If you have luck, let me know.

I believe this is the bulb you are using. If not this is still a good
thread for information.

Thanks everyone, I'll try the new lamp at HD. I thought the 6100k rating
would be better than 5100k.
BTW I just bought the 6100k flourescent lamp like your old one, Chris. I use
it somewhere in the house.

Plants, such as algae, do better in the lower (red) end of the spectrum.
That's why you could use a standard incadescent bulb. 5100K is good but it'd
be sweet to see them make a 2700 or 3100K bulb of the same
wattage/intensity.
