Well my first coral (green star polyps) died I think. The day before
yesterday they were opened and looking great, but yesterday they were only
half open, and then today they were all retracted and wouldn't open. I took
my water to the LFS yesterday to have it checked. (I have a test kit at
home, but don't have a refractometer) Well they said my salinity was a
little high at 1.026. They keep theirs at 1.024. ph was 8.2 ammonia,
nitrite, and nitrate were all 0. alkalinity was 240ppm.
My temp was a little higher than normal at 82F and the salinity had went up
a bit. (My RO unit broke and I'm looking into replacements) but other than
that, I think that was the only changes.
When the polyps wouldn't open today, I did put it in a little bit better
spot with more flow, and more light. However this afternoon there was still
nothing opened.
Is there anything I can do? Or did this coral die on me that fast?

I had some close up for more than 9 months one time before opening again
(tank took a hit when the hurricane came through) so don't give up. you
might try another tank just to see if there is some unknown variable causing
them to not be happy. Example mine is happier in my quarantine tank even
though the water in it came from my display tank. The main difference is the
quarantine tank only has pc lighting and maybe they like the lower light
because they open up an inch or more

Thanks for the reply. It makes me feel better that likely I didn't kill the
first animal
in my care. After writing to this newsgroup, I did some more research
and discovered that snails or hermits crawling on them, lighting, water
flow, or a
number of other things can keep them from opening up. I do remember some
snails up there grazing around them the day before they didn't open up.
They were
also in a part of the tank that didn't get the direct lighting ( I only have
110W of PC)
Also the water current wasn't that great. I moved them to a better spot and
hopefully
they open up soon. -Chris

They are very tuff. Trust me. They close when things walk on them.

Mine closed up for over a week... then opened right up. Not to worry...
he'll be back... it is just a matter of time.
