Use base rock for any spot that won't be easily visible and exposed
to light. In a 72 gallon tank I would be sure that at least 50lbs(us)
of the rock was cured LR. What type is best? I prefer Tonga branch,
myself, but it's largely personal. Look for rock that doesn't have
large amounts of algae on it, and when lifted out of the water, it
shouldn't smell too bad. LR that's revently been transported WILL
smell like, well, the ocean, but it won't smell like a fish cannery.
And yes, your base rock will slowly develop the internal bacteria
that make it "live" by it's close proximity to cured LR.

Rich R,

Maybe define what you mean by "live rock" and what the goals of the tank
it's going in first. Even with a definition this question often opens a can
of worms... dirty and wiggly ones even! Many use and like
http://www.hirocks.com/ , http://www.reeferrocks.com/ , or even DIY rocks as
base rocks. When I started there were no places to get decent base rocks.
If there were I couldn't locate any so I went with the DIY.
I wouldn't change a thing now, but had those sites been around back then
I likely would have bought from one or both of them. As for how much to
use/add... how much patience do you have? You can take it all the way up to
99+% if you like. Reports of happiness seem to be most from at or greater
than 20% "real" rock with 40% often being mentioned as well.
