I know this is a trivial naive question, but I have a 2ft tank in my
living room but would love a 4ft one to give my fish more space to play
in. My wife dislikes fish and flatly refuses to entertain any idea of a
4ft tank, even though my solid Ercol sideboard would have no trouble
taking the weight.

Is there any proven way of converting a woman obsessed with interior
decoration drivel on tv, to the idea of a bigger tank?

If I ever wanted to add a new tank to the living room/ kitchen/ spare
bedroom, etc, I used to send the wife out shopping and by the time she was
back the tank was located, filled with water, planted and running. After the
initial outburst, it didn't take long for her to calm down and appreciate
the new addition. My worst addition was a 6x2x2 in the front room which was
only 15x 12 when we first got married. Oh she moaned about that for ages
until the discus grew in size and the Amazon swords grew up the back of the
tank and the crypts carpeted the front and middle. She pleaded with me not
to sell it when we moved to a bigger house. On the other hand, maybe that
was a bit of reverse psychology!!!

Regards

Why not let her design the tank decor and pick some of the fish ? - "oh
these are so pretty" as long as they fit in with your environment and
plans....if she is into design programs she might take this on as a project
afterall the tank is part of your home interior design....BTW I wouldn't
ruin your Ercol sideboard with this - try and incorporate a decent stand
into part of her design project????

From a woman fighting a man on introduction of tanks. I look at my tanks as
an extension of the overall look that I am creating within the house -
including plants, ornaments, lighting etc....I got a 7.5UK gall planted Hex
tank into the main Living Room as a "lighting feature" - imagination my
friend, might just get you there ;-) and yes I confess there are two 200L
(48" plus tanks) and some smaller ones dotted around the kitchen and my
son's bedroom....I occassionally get the "too many tanks" gripe but not very
often....

Thanks for the suggestions. I had toyed with the fait accompli idea and
just install the whole thing while she was out at work, but I'm such a
coward. Also it would seem that I am imposing my wants on her, and her
revenge would be to have her way in another shopping spree that might
give my credit card account a good pasting, although that may be the
price I will have to pay.

As for designing the whole thing, I think her problem is not so much
that she dislikes the whole idea, it is just she seems not to like
fish, any fish. And I think she harbours an irrational fear of the
whole thing breaking under the pressure and her coming downstairs one
morning to find the contents all over the carpet.
