Hello,
I have a small (20l) aquarium running in a bedroom and as I am a very
light sleeper, I am having trouble finding suitably quiet filtration.
I started off with an Elite Mini internal filter, which although
relatively noisy for a bedroom wasn't too bad. However, I found it to
be next-to-useless as a filter, especially the venturi air system.
So, I decided to change this out for an Interpet IAF10 Internal Air
Filter, powered by a Rena Air 50 pump. I chose this pump because of
the promised "Extremely Quiet" operation on the box. However, this
beastly combination produces more noise than the Elite Mini ever knew
how to make.
Can anyone suggest an affordable, as near silent as possible
filtration and aeration solution? My tank is not yet stocked, but I
want to keep a fairly small number of neons and guppies or tiny barbs.
I have a Fluval 2+ in my main tank in the lounge which seems fairly
quiet so I'm considering a 1+ for this tank.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris :-)

I use an interpet ipf1 duo in my bedroom, dead quiet (barely audible when
you`re right next to the tank) it's tiny so should be fine for a 20l tank.
Closest thing to a silent airpump is an old second nature whisper 300... its
quiet but you can still hear it.

just get another fluval 2+ and turn down the flow rate, the worst you
will get is an overfiltered tank (some of us even deliberately do this
:¬)
In my daughters bedroom with a 180 litre tank I had an internal juwel
and an external eheim, in the end the eheim (which are very quiet)
still had to go to be replaced with a second internal filter

With the filters, I have found that keeping them clean helps keep them quiet
too :)
Though the 2plus is a quiet one ,as I had it running in my bedroom tank.

I'd recommend an exterior filter, like an aquaclear mini (I've got
that running on my 40l) or a Marineland Penguin if you can get your
hand on them (There's a Penguin 330 on my 200l). Boths aquariums are
in my bedroom, and the only time I hear something is when some sand
gets in the filter, or the water level is low enough to have a
splashing sound. Aside of that, there's a very quiet whirling sound
from the Penguin propeller, but my model is designed for aquariums
up to 280l, so the Mini or Bio-Wheel Mini (I recommend the latest
since the difference should not exceed 10$) shouldn't be audible, as
long as you keep the water line high enough.
