Hi all, [and apologies for cross-postings]
I've just inherited a tropical freshwater tank (with fish) from some people
who're moving away. Its now set up and everything seems stable.
The largest inhabitant is an angel fish (Pterophyllum scalare). The previous
owners think he is a 'he' - but were not absolutely certain. He is just over
5 inches tall, and is thought to be about 3-5 years old.
We would like to get him an angel fish friend, but I would like your
opinions on whether this is a good idea.
Primarily, if they turn out to be of the same sex is there any danger of
them fighting? or what if they are opposite sexes, and simply fail to get
along?
Additionally, given that it only seems possible to buy baby ones around here
(~ 2-3 inches tall), is the age gap going to cause a problem? i.e. Will the
old one bully the younger one? will the younger one be upset when the older
one shuffles off the mortal coil?
Or am I being too anthropomorphic about the whole thing?

Experienced Angel breeders can sex them, I can have a bash at sexing them,
but without quite a lot of experience sexing Angels is not easy.
You aren't being that anthropomorphic, assuming you aren't expecting human
emotions. They are cichlids, and therefore about as complex an
individual as a fish can be. They might get on, they might not, they
might fight or not depending on how they get on. They might pair up, even
if they are the same sex. If they spawn in a tank with other fish expect
trouble, they will try and defend the whole tank against all comers.
Fighting doesn't necessarily mean they don't get on. In may simply mean
that one has decided it's time to have babies and the other doesn't want
to co-operate.

I have 2 golds who got on well for months, added a small black angel, who
really grew up well with them. The 2 males are now together in 45g. The
unsexed gold (3" round body 9" tall) in 65g has a baby angel again and is
very protective with it. If you get a small one, be prepared to feed it
extra as they can't eat as fast as other tankmates. My baby manages to to
only eat one bloodworm before all the food is eaten by the others, so I feed
it extra at the side afterwards.

Been there! Done that!
I inherited an angel, 'HE' was the alpha fish in a large mixed tank.
Bought a couple of 'large babies' they got on fine. To the extent I actually
got eggs and fry.
Turns out HE is actually a she (saw her laying the eggs!)
and she is now quite happy with her third husband having outlived the
previous two!
My recommendation is to buy as many 'babies'as you can fit in/afford and let
them sort out
who is top dog.
