Please log in for more thread options Thanks for people's advice so far - things are going well with the new tank.
I've lost one fish so far - no sign of it anywhere, but it was acting
'weird' the night before so figure it died and was thoughtfully disposed of
by the other fish before I woke up the next morning. The other fish seem to
be fine. Most of the plants are growing OK, although one looks a little ill
for no particualr reason. I think perhaps it needs more light than its
currently getting and will move it toward the back of the tank where the
light is situated.
I've read about the nitrogen cycle (thankyou once again) and my tank seems
stable (but then again, I bought an established tank and merely relocated
it, rather than starting from scratch, so thats not such a big surprise I
guess.
My next newbie questions are:
My 3 year old loves feeding the fish (I regulate the amount of food he gets
to put into the tank) and gets a great thrill when he feels the fish brush
against his fingers. Am I endangering the fish any by having his fingers in
the tank at most feeding times? (I try to make sure he has clean hands
before they go in, and they'd only be in there for 30 seconds to a minute
per day at the most)
Not coincidentally, there are lots of 3 year old by hand prints etc etc on
the outside glass. Doesn't bother the fish any, but makes the tank look
grubby and interferes with the general viewing pleasure. I am assuming that
cleaning the glass using a glass-cleaning spray (such as Windex) is going
not good for the fish. Any suggestions, or should I just spray the Windex
onto the cloth and proceed normally?
We're going on holidays for a (hopefully) blissful month long vacation next
month. I can get the housesitters to feed the fish if needs be, but would it
be better to get one of those holiday blocks? Will any other fishy
maintanence be strictly necessary if I do a water change & filter clean just
before we go away?
Thanks again,
Yowie

pancakes can you fit in a doghouse? None, icecream doesn't have bones.

Easiest and safest way is to wet a paper towel and wipe over the glass, then
use a dry towel to buff it up.

Ahh this is a problem I had and the lady friend invented a neat trick.
You know the razor on a stick you clean algae off the inside with ? Well
get a cup of tank water and keep dipping it into it and use it on the
outside and it gets rid of all the muck there as well. A quick buff with
a cloth and your tank is as good as new.
