Went to one of the better fish shops at the weekend, one that comes
highly recommended, to get some malawi cichlids, what a joke, the
captions didn't match the fish in the tank, the staff knw nothing. On
the way back I stopped off at one of the chain stores, very helpful
staff but again no knowledge of subject, I picked up a tropheus
Gravillor based on the blurb, but I've got a bad bad feeling they were
mis-identified and that the male and two females I got may in fact be
two different types of male of a far less peaceful nature that want I
wanted. (please reassure me that it is possible to have a purple blue
male and a yellow female for Tropheus Gracillor, otherwise I think
I've got a Tropheus tropheus male and no idea what the suppose females
are.

I woiuld like to regard this as the exception, but to be honest it's
typical of almost every shop you go into, it's not rocket science to
label fish correctly and to have some knowledge of what you are
selling. Maybe it's better up in the North, but in the SW I've yet to
come across a shop where the staff (no matter how helpful) know more
than a little bit about what they are selling.

Rant over

Brian

In SW Scotland I have always found M & R Dogfish in Glasgow to be
very knowledgeable and helpful.

I have 2, one good ,one not so good. The bad one had 3 big angels returned
as owner was giving up. I asked if the owner had said what sex they are.As
they didn't know, I left them. A week later, I saw them with no fins left,
in a very small tank, on the top shelf, out of the way. I asked what had
happened, and he said he had put them in with gold barbs who had eaten all
their fins. All night I thought how awful it was, and phoned the shop the
next day, offering to take them as I have room in a 45g . He said he wanted
to keep them, and I explained they need very clean water and space to grow
their fins back, and my 45g is much bigger than anything he can offer. He
said they will be ok in a few days, that fins grow back very quickly. I have
4 angels and know otherwise, it is true they will grow back, but not in a
small tank and in a few days. Mary

Mark (my hubby) and I have been very pleased with this shop,
http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/shopfinder.php?store=208&thiscounty=Devon
it's staffed by the owner who is a long term fish hobbist as well as being a
retailer.
I do know what you mean about sub standard shops though and the only way to
keep the good ones is to avoid the bad ones!
Good luck,
Denise

Totally agree with you especially when it comes to the Malawi's....I think
that I know for sure what 50% of the fish are - with the rest it is wait and
see if they grow into what I was sold (which I doubt).....but maybe I've
been very lucky coz they all seem to have settled well together - haven't a
clue as to the sex match either.

Generally on the more common fish (with the exception of SAE's) the shops I
use seem pretty clued up...

BTW maybe they are sold the fish incorrectly rather than labelling them
wrongly...IME Malawi's are a total minefield hence I can't identify for sure
the other 50% however much research I've done...

Rant agreed with *grin*
