After losing out to some fabulous set ups on ebay over the weekend, I have
come to the conclusion that I shall have to make my own. In the past I have
made a cabinet for my 6x18"x2 out of melamine. I stayed in place for over 3
years, but that was more luck than judgement.

I am now going to have a smaller tank 48"x15"x24" and am once again looking
to make my own cabinet. I have decided this time though to make a skeleton
frame from 3x2 for some extra sturdiness. The big question is what should I
clad it with outside? I want a mahogany effect, or dark wood to match the
rest of the house. Can I get away with using a plywood and staining it or
should I clad it again in melamine? Failing that is there something anyone
else would suggest?

The idea is that the cabinet will be used to house a 3' sump so access into
it would need to be good and the ventilation to the rear I would also
imagine need to be good. I intend to house some extra lighting beneath the
tank and also potentially a protein skimmer and of course the return pump,
all of which will generate an amount of heat.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Regards

Mark
