I was in Tong Garden Centre today and they have a good range of tanks and
tropical fish/accessories. I was taken by the "Coffee Table" style which
has a price tag of £499 !!!
Does anyone know if these can be purchased anywhere else at maybe a little
lower price please?

There are various types available - at a fair range of prices. The cheapest
are round plastic and they go up through small framed gass through big
frameless glass to huge acrylic ones.
One thing they rarely tell you is you can only use them for coldwater or
ambient temperature fish.
As soon as you heat the water you get condenstion on the glass & can't see
anything.
eBay is worth a look.

Ahhhh Thanks Sue I didn't think of that .. I think I might have to rethink
what kind of tank I get as I do want Warm water fish.

Cheers

I wonder...
As these <http://www.theaquariamshop.co.uk/ishop/1029/shopscr.html> for
example seem to be custom made.
It seems to me that you could cut the tank so as to give the top a couple
of degrees slope.
Now, cut a largish corner off the glass, seal round the edges, and make
a slightly raised section in the corner, with appropriate decoration on
the top.

No condensation, as there is no air-water interface (over most of the
table).
Much use of magnets would be needed.
Alternatively - if you fitted a couple of fans, to blow the air vigourously
around the tank top, then you should be able to heat the surface adequately
to avoid condensation.
