Tropical fish from hot climates so the water temps must fluctuate around
the settings we use in the summer it must get hotter and in the winter it
must get cooler or is that not the case

I was thinking that they might like the tank cooling at night, if I turn the
heater off.

It's true in some places but some equatorial lakes don't changed much
at all. The temperature is often very stable. OTOH some river
temperatures change by huge amounts.

I think so to a certain degree....however, one of the problems that we have
is that in the UK our homes are not set up to cope heat.....I don't believe
that the ambient temp is too much of an issue but the problem is with our
well insulated houses without any air con in the UK the ambient temp rises
above acceptable levels - not just talking fish but all of us. The temp in
my house today was way above outside - outside was 32C inside was averaging
at 38C - at the moment all my tanks are inside - I can't cope with those
temps....and I don't think my fish can either....

So really, it is about fixing a comfort level for us as well as our fish....
