Hi - Is this stuff any good in an aquarium?

I was going to take some South for a pal who has a large aquarium but I am
not sure if it is suitable for using. He is fairly new to the hobby but
thinks it will be ok. It looks very pretty, most is white but some areas of
the beach have it mixed with purple.

If it just requires washing in fresh water I could put it in a fast flowing
burn to cleanse it for a week or two to save him the problem.

TIA for any advice

Mike

It depends on the water in the aquarium. The coral will gradually
dissolve in fresh water and turn the water alkaline. That will be
great for some fishes that prefer alkaline water but it will kill some
others.

Thanks for that Stephen. I'll get him to check out with whatever fish he
has. Have you any idea on the breakdown timescale and would it be better in
that case to seive through the stuff for the larger pieces in preference to
the small?. It would be problem doing that for him as I will be adding the
rest to the garden in any case.

The fish I keep prefer alkaline water so I have no problem with coral
dissolving. In fact I use crushed up coral for the substrate. If your
friend keeps that live in neutral to acid water then coral would be a
bad idea no mater what you do with it.
