fish in me aquarium. If I threw them into the river will they make it
past the catfish?

Recently in Cape Town, South Africa, goldfish were removed from the
ponds on Table Mountain, because they are not indigenous to the area.
I don't think they would make it past the catfish though....

Goldfish out of depth on Table Mountain?
Not since Disney's Finding Nemo has the fate of a few hundred fish so
captured the attention of fish fans, animal rights organisations and
ichthyologists.
The sighting of bright red and orange goldfish in a weir on Table
Mountain has spawned several theories about how, and when, these
ubiquitous household pets made the break from fish tank to mountain
stream. Were they leftovers from a fishy film shoot or were they dumped
there by a pet shop owner wanting to rid himself of extra stock?
"highly unlikely" the goldfish would have been able to breed from just
one fish Richard Breckwoldt claimed he put the first goldfish into the
weir five years ago when his girlfriend had to go overseas. Instead of
flushing the lone fish, Breckwoldt said they decided to transfer their
aquatic companion to their favourite mountain pool. "With its moss and
dead matter, the pool was an ideal place for the goldfish."
He was amazed to discover several more goldfish in the pool when he
returned a year later. "And there are more each time I visit the pool,"
he said. But Professor Paul Skelton, freshwater fish expert, said it
was "highly unlikely" the goldfish would have been able to breed from
just one fish, as suggested by Breckwoldt.
"There must have been several goldfish to start off with," he said, "as
goldfish breed externally". Rod van der Berg said goldfish have been
swimming in the Table Mountain pool since the 1980s when he used to
skinny dip there on weekends.
Although no one can say for certain whether the school spotted on
Sunday are new residents or offspring of goldfish who have been on
Table Mountain for decades, there is consensus that the fish must be
saved and relocated.
Skelton said while goldfish are generally harmless, they are aquatic
aliens because they could transmit diseases and could be "very
damaging" to the ecosystem of a freshwater source.
The SPCA's Alan Perrins offered to adopt the fish until permanent homes
could be found. "We don't want them to be euthanased," he said.
His interest was welcomed by Fiona Kalk of Table Mountain National
Parks, but she said the fish would be relocated to a pond near Rhodes
Memorial. Poor visibility on Tuesday meant TMNP officials could not
trap and remove the fish from the weir.
The pool's water may have to be pumped out today to make it easier for
officials to net the artful dodgers.

<snip>
A couple of years back I was working at an airport where I found a whole
load of fat, healthy goldfish living in one of the Emergency Water Tanks
used by the airport Fire Section to pump water from in the event of an
incident... after a few enquiries it transpired that one of the firemen had
released his kids' fish in there years ago, and they'd bred like crazy.
I only hope the filters on their pump hoses had reasonably fine holes..!
