I bought 2 brand new elite heaters yesterday. both of them, in separate
tanks are set to 24o yet currently the water temperature in both tanks
(which was around 24 when I put the new heaters in) is over 30o. Just what
is happening - surely they can't both be faulty?? The temp is measured with
a digital probe which is placed half way down the tank

The temperature settings for the heater are a guide only. You won't find
many (if any) heaters where you can reliably set it a temperature and expect
it to read that value. Water temperature should always be checked with a
good, reliable thermometer (which you are doing). In the past I have used
heaters for my discus which I set at 28 deg and the water has been 34- 36
deg.

Cheers

Mark

Check that you digital thermometer is working. My £9.95 Maplin aquarium
thermometer developed a fault where it read 5°C over, thus I kept turning
the heater down, thinking heater was misbehaving. Luckily the thermometer
has an internal and external reading so after removal from tank and leaving
a while, switching between internal and external temp revealed the 5°C
error. When I got a replacement the tank temp was 21°C (whoops), also
interestingly the same as indicated by a stick on LCD colour thermometer
strip on outside of tank.

Nope - tube thermometer says same readings. Admittedly it's very warm in the
house at the moment which could be affecting it but I think I'm going to get
different heaters, rather than take any chances.
