Fighting Clown Loaches? elyob 03-15-2005

I have a couple of clown loaches. At the moment, they are both breathing
really fast and seem to be 'fighting'. Well, the big one has gone totally
silver instead of black stripes, and the dorsal(?) fin is stood right up and
taut. They sometimes 'kiss' and get stuck mouth on mouth, and don't really
seem to be leaving each other alone or playing too rough. The smaller one is
remaining in it's full colours.

It's not the first time it's happened, but normally they swim about together
no problems. I've read the 'greying' is because it's angry, but are there
other reasons?

Thanks

Mine do this as well. I've got 6 Clown Loaches and two are significantly
bigger than the others - around 3-4 inches. It's the two bigger ones that
appear to fight from time to time. They do exactly the same as you are
describing except both of them "grey". After a while they go back to normal
again and swim around happily. The last time I saw it was over a piece of
cucumber. I'd be very interested in anyone elses comments on this

My 3 had to sort out the alpha between them, they did fight a little, greying
out, nearly purple, and it lasted for 10 mins and then swam away together as
normal. It went on for a few weeks with no damage, usually around 4pm after
their afternoon nap. Once it was sorted out, they play together very well.
The alpha can grey out when he wants and the other 2 take no notice now as
they are now nearly 4" and just get on with things. If yours hurt each other
around the mouth, you may have to seperate them for a short while, bearing
in mind, their "fighting" looks worse than it is. My 3 steal the show,
dominating the front the front of the tank with short naps between meals.
Make sure you feed them enough as this can cause more tensions. Apart from
bloodworm/brineshrimp mine love pushing and shoving each other with small
pieces of algae wafers

My two largest clowns both about 8-9 inches fight every now and again then
go to seperate parts of the tank for awhile sulking , then within a few
mins
they are side by side again and all is hunkydory, the other 6 smaller
clowns
just get out the way.
