I've noted that my fish don't look happy for a day or so after a water
change/cleanout. I'm careful to wash the filter sponges in discarded
tank water, and try not to wash them too thoroughly. Also, they look
unhappy immediately after the change, before any results of damaged
biological filtration should come to light. I use a water conditioner
on new water, and equalise water temperature before adding new water.
I've wondered if they don't like the increased current from the filter
after it's cleaned. They are mbuna by the way. Any ideas?
