I take on board what folks have said re. Usenet Vs web forums, but I
feel we usenutters are a dying breed. I have been using
http://www.uk-aquarist.com/index.php?act=idx
For a little while now, and yes it takes a bit of learning, but the
people are friendly and helpful, the site owner responds quickly to
even the stupidest query and there is a lot of info etc. I recommend
giving it a try...

I am a member of a group that is available in both usenet and web
forum formats. I am trying to find out which format is most popular.
It will be interesting to see the results.

To follow up my own post. By sampling messages we have established
that, when given a choice, 80% of group members will use NNTP (usenet)
in preference to the WEB. It seems usenet isn't going to die in the
imminent future, it's all related to availability.

I use forums as I have specialised in my fishkeeping activities, although I
still like to look in on usenet. The discus and marine forum communities are
a wealth of information, unfortunately the only marine newsgroups are
dominated by overseas users and are not the friendliest of places. We are a
bit lost in the UK with fishkeeping newsgroups which is probably why the
forums have been so popular. The other problem with forums is that if
uncontrolled, the images posted by users take up so much space and time to
download, plus if the database is a bit slow!!!!!

I think there is a place for both, but text groups are by far the quickest
and easiest ;)

Interesting.

(OT)
Any breakdown on what proportion of each choice are newcomers to the
internet and how many are old dinosaurs ? (who may remember the days
before the 'www" ? when nntp, telnet, ftp etc. were _the_ modes and
protocols lol! )
