I have noticed that one of my Giant danios eyes seem to be bulging...which
has progressively gotten worse...to the point where one of the eyes has
dissappeared. Obviously the fish was in some distress having only one eye
and rapid breathing at the surface. No other fish, including other GD's have
been affected.
What causes this rather grotesque manner of death and what can I do to
prevent other following the same fate?

Sorry for your loss. Sound like the poor guy scaped his eye on
something rough, or he was attacked, though I doubt that, as they are
such fast swimmers, so its very unlikely. However the wound must have
got infected and that would explain the bulge. Moreover, the infection
progressed whilst the fish's immune system took a dive. I've
experienced this with Malawi cichlids, who often chase each other,
sometimes into rocks and decor. Usually the eye becomes white and
sometimes fungus sets in. However the condition usually clears if not
too serious, or else an antibiotic should be administered if the eye is
swelling or gets any bit worse. Generally table salt clearssmall
lesions and scratches. I think you should re-evaluate the space, if
perhaps you have too many giant danio, as they are a species that
require open water and space, due to the nature of their fast and
furious swimming.
