Further to my first post on the 13th of January, my female guppy's keep
giving birth to fry!
My tank is 6 weeks old now and I started with 5 tetras and 2 pairs of
guppy's. The males died within a couple of days then 2 weeks later I awoke
to a tank full of fry(well, about 20). A week later another 10 arrived and
now, sometime last night, another 18 arrived. Both the guppy's that are left
are 'supposed' to be female and the have both had swollen tummies that have
went down after the appearance of fry. In total, I must have nearly 50 fry,
and my tank(125 Litre) will not be able to accommodate this amount of fish.
My question is, how long is the guppy gestation period and how long do the
fish remain fertilised?
I had thought that perhaps one of my females is a male but the both 'look'
like females(no colour) and this has been confirmed by a friend who has kept
guppy's for years but has never reared so many so quick!
I have arranged to give away some of the guppies when they are big enough to
catch but would like to know if I can expect more from the same original
fish?
Also, why aren't the adult guppy's eating the fry like it says they do in
the books?!?

Gestation is about 28 days and varies by a few days according to water
temperature.

They remain fertilized for about 3 months, possibly 4.

Their success at eating their fry depends on the adult's size, how well fed
they are, population density, amount of cover and the tank size. Under some
conditions, most fry survive, and in others, none survive, though typically
you can expect several fry to survive from each batch.

I have a large dense plastic plant that reaches the full height and more of
my Juwel Vision 180 that fry of various fish that seem to breed in my tank
hang out away from all the other fish. So far its Guppies, Zebra Cichlids
and millions of Fire mouths.......
