Hi we've kept fish for years but we've never known them to breed.
We originally had six fully grown fish which are all still alive in a 2x1ft
tank
However a few weeks ago we noticed two new ones.

We think they are roughly four weeks apart.
Today there were at least another two newborns but one got
eaten while we were watching.
Is there anything we can do to stop them getting eaten?
We've turned the light off so they can't be seen so easily.

Lots of hiding places that are too small for the bigger fish. I use
piles of rocks but some people prefer to use plants.
