Are they as good as their reputation? I have noticed on ebay, lots are for
sale, about 1 year old. My 3 are one year old now, and I can see why. The
plants grew well with their standard lighting, now battling algae all of a
sudden. The cycle holds very well, even when 2 were overstocked growing out
platy fry for months. My Vision 260, with 1000 l/h powerhead. plus u/gravel
filtration seems to not have enough movement as plants slow it down. As you
get more knowledge, do we need to increase the standard lights as they are
about 1 watt per gall and 2 or 3 is recommended for plants. Are the internal
filters not good enough in the long run, as each tank matures and holds more
fish, do they need changing to external? If it all needs changing, I may get
another type as I need another tank for my spawning angels. I was thinking
of a Rio 125, which has better height for 2 angels. Mary

I've certainly had no problems with my Rio 400 and Rio 240, but my Rekord 60
algaes up pretty quick.
Though this is full of Platy fry.

from what ive seen mary, the internal filters are siliconed into place these
can be removed with a sharp knife and an external filter used instead, the
problem is as with all tanks if the fillter system becomes unable to cope
with the fluval you simply upgrade your internal filter, im thinking of
getting the trigon 190, if i do i will remove the internal filter and
install a fluval 304 external filter from the beginning, di

I have had a Jewel Rio 180 for a couple of years. I have had no problems
with the filter system or lights. I did have to replace the heater though.
I dont really understand the need to buy a systemised tank and then replace
the components.
If you want to run an external filter/pendant style lighting/protien
skimmers and the like you would be better off buying suitable tank in the
first place.

I have a Trigon 190. looks great but very difficult to maintain. I need
steps to reach the filter or the back of the tank and you can't see the
heater. I've added an extra fluval 3 plus and another heater. Use the heater
that I can see as main heater and the juwel one as backup. Also, if you're
going to stick to juwel spares for the filter, it works out expensive. (I
use juwel nitrate sponge, skip the carbon one and use general filter floss
for the top sponge). Also my hatchets are buggers for jumping into the
filter compartment. (goodness knows how - there's only a tiny gap)
