Please log in for more thread options I am currently setting up a marine aquarium. I have been looking around
for lighting systems and am looking at T5's.
I was wondering if anyone has used the lights available here:
http://www.envirolites.co.uk/ and would they work on a marine aquarium.
Also, on Ebay there are some T5 luminaries that sell cheaply
(http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/T5-AQUARIUM-OVERHEAD-LIGHT-2x54W-inst-Halide-4ft-Twinl_W0QQitemZ7752531067QQcategoryZ46314QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem ).
Does anyone know if these are suitable for marine aquariums, they use
T5 lights but I cant find out if they are high output ones or not. I
have emailed the seller on several occasions and he has not got back to
me so I am starting to think that they are not, anyone tried one of
them? I belive they are made by a company called SilverSun but internet
searches dont turn up anything.
Thanks Mat.

These lights look as though they have been designed to grow plants above the
ground, not underwater. If you read the bumf about holding a light meter to
the bulb and moving away, you will see just how much power they lose in air.
Now put them over a tank full of water and the light penetration will be
even less. I would say they are defiitely not suited for marine use, plus
the connectors probably won't be waterproof, or allow for salt creep.

Haven't seen these on ebay before, but yes it would seem they are for
aquarium use. The fact the seller has not responded would be cause for
concern to me, maybe enough so as not to bid on them. It doesn't say, but I
am assuming because of the kelvin rating and the wattage that they are both
white lights. Not knowing whether you want to have a fish only or mixed
fish/ invert aquarium, I would say the luminaire is alright for keeping the
fish only side of it. If you wish to keep inverts, you may want to consider
replacing one of the tubes with an actinic. Whatever you do, you will only
really have enough output to keep low light loving soft corals, four tube
luminaires are much better for marine keeping in my opinion.

Mark

these lamp are not usefull in marine tank, there are only few bulb types
avaible, none of them can be used over marine tank. What U need is bulb
with 10.000 K light temp and bulb with blue (actynic) light 4 corals.
