Just a quick follow up to the Methylene blue crisis of about 4 weeks ago. As
soon as I got the replies, I did a 50% water change and added activated
carbon and a carbon sponge to the main (Jewel) filter and a carbon sponge to
the secondary filter (Fluval). Luckily I also have fluval filters in my
other tanks so I could change both sponges to well matured ones out of the
other tanks. I gradually changed the 101 sponges in the jewel filter,
changing the nitrite one first which was due to be changed anyway. I saved
some filter gunk out of the other tanks and kept a new jewel sponge in it
for a few days then changed that. Each day for about 4 days I did around a
40% water change and have done 2 a week since then. There is still one
original sponge left in that is ready to change. The substrate is sand so
the M Blue didn't affect that and it hasn't seemed to have affected the
plants either. Up to now, nearly 4 weeks on, water levels are fine and have
remained ok throughout. PH is lower but I took the coral I was filtering
over (to keep Ph up a bit) out to get the carbon in. Up to now ( and this is
tempting fate I know), all fish are fine. So I'd like to know if you think I
can now do away with the carbon? The whole purpose of putting the M blue in
in the first place was to treat a wound after a spat with the Odessa barbs
and the same barb has also nipped my angel so I'd like to add Melafix to the
tank (Can't quarantine the wounded - quarantine tank currently holding 2 new
fish for a different tank). So what do you think, - can I remove the carbon?
TIA
