In what way do you mean "native fish" are you talking fish like tench,
roach, rudd etc?? , I think you can sometimes find green or gold tench
available in some water garden centers, but not very often , as they are
usually covered by paper work from Environment Agency and you would need
Section 30 paperwork, which is a hassle as for any other native species
not many would survive in a garden pond and probably not at all in a tank

if your thinking of wild caught fish don't forget the parasites infections
ETC that they carry , in my youth I caught some minnows and brought them
home and wiped out all my dads gold fish in the pond? but I do remember the
school keeping sticklebacks and even getting them to lay eggs but I cannot
remember if they hatched

I had lots of sticklebacks spawning and producing more than I could
cope with. All they need is lots of live food and something to make
their nests. They are a very interesting fish to keep.

About 20 years ago I kept some wild caught 3 spined sticklebacks in a small
aquarium. I kept them for a year or so successfully, they easiler took to
flake, but I gave them daphnia and microworms too.
In Spring and summer, the males turn bright blue on top, with bright red
bellies, looking as good as any tropical fish. They made an attempt at
building a nest, but I don't recall seeing any fry.
