Interesting stories. I'm not planning to keep any native fish, but my
young son has just started on a "pond dipping" kick. I'm not entirely
sure about catching wild fish, even though we treat them with great
care and return them gently to the pond or river. For the comment on
parasites, one stickleback that we caught had a parasite attached that
was so large, that at human scale it would have been like having a
rugby ball sized thing attached to you. The local "water" is the river
Soar, which has at least sticklebacks, perch, gudgeon, and some carp
like fish, most probably roach. The babies we catch have a dark line
approximately covering their lateral line, so I thought they might be
minnows. But the only adult open water carplike fish I've seen have
been something like roach, or rudd. A web page I've seen said that
roach were common in the river, so that's my guess. My son did ask if
we could take some fish home, but I said that these fish wouldn't be
happy in a mbuna tank.

I have spent time watching sticklebacks in ponds and rivers, and have
seen the breeding colours. But I thought that they would not be
suitable for a small tank due to aggression during the breeding
session. I have seen a male in breeding condition chasing other fish
over metres.

When I was a kid a few Tench etc went into our garden pond. I'm sure we
broke umpteen laws, but this is 40 years ago M'Ludd :-)

They lived in there for years quite happily. It was an enormous 30 foot
long pond with various deep bits my Dad built. In fact when my Mum moved
out to a bungalow some 35 years later their offspring were still in
there, so I'd say "Yes" given enough space they can survive happily.
