I am having a problem with relations between my platties and neon
tetras in my (approx. 80l) community tank.

I recently decommissioned a smaller tank which held 5 neons (about 2cm)
and introduced them, along with 6 new, larger neons (about 2.5-3cm)
into the main tank. The main tank had got 4 platties (pretty small as
platties go) and 1 harlequin.

Since Sunday, there have been two neon fatalities, both resulting from
the platties attacking them and 'biting' their stomachs. The group of
platties then proceed to try and eat the corpse.

We were advised by the LFS that neons were suitable tankmates for
platties both when buying the original 5, and the new 6.

Just wondering if any had any ideas on how to stop this happening?
Common sense suggests re-instating the smaller tank, but this is not
really a viable option. Has anyone else had experience of platties and
neons living together?

I'd be really grateful for any help or ideas.

Thanks,
Chris Rogers.

Well that Platys are Hard water fish and Neons are soft water fish, but I
think they have both been bred in captivity for so long now it hardly
matters.

I've never seen an aggressive platy, apart from two males squabbling over
one female. They are however inveterate feeders on dead and dying fish.
I suspect your Neons are succumbing to something else and the Platys are
eating them.

I like platties becuase they are pretty colours and "fish" shaped. i like
neons because of the bright blue flash as they shoal in and out of the
vegetation. never had any trouble one with t'other.

but then i like angels becuase they are slow and elegant - but they are
supposed to eat small neons. but mine never have.

Just checking. the new tank only had 5 small fish and you have then over
doubled the fish load. Just thinking of cycling?

Ken

I've had the larger Cardinal Tetra and Platys live together ok, but
Neons are a bit small. And you know what they say about
Platys ? They'll eat just about anything :-)

Thank you all for your thoughts.

Ken - I take your point about cycling, but it isn't a new tank. It's
been established for over a year and has been running at safe levels
for at least 10 months. Thanks anyway, though.

Chris.
