I have never had platys and neons together, but I did (for a time)
introduce a couple of small pearl gouramis (because I liked them) to a
tank with neon and cardinal tetras. I never saw any fish attack each
other, but the neons started disappearing. After they were down to half
of their initial population, I removed the gouramis, added some more
neons and they survived for ages. The cardinal numbers were unaffected.
I concluded that neon tetras were very timid, and maybe even the
presence of 'large' fish will cause them to hide away and not dare to
come out in the open even to feed.

I wonder if they just die from fright and starvation.
