A very cheap, safe way of adding Calcium carbonate to a tank.

Thanks for that. Got one yesterday. You say about 1" square - can I ask what
size of tank that's in? How quickly does the ph rise? (Getting a bit
paranoid about it now - it hadn't seemed a problem until I posted it on ng
!)

The size doesn't matter ;o) but for 40 - 100gallons I just crack the thing
across & put in a piece. When it gets gungy just scrape the edges.
The stuff only disolves when the pH is low and will only take the kH up to
about 3 so you don't have to worry about sudden changes. Unless your pH is
very low you won't see a pH rise - but it won't drop if that makes sense?
It just gives enough buffering to prevent the pH crashing.
