Reusing a marine filter in freshwater. bhd 12-05-2005

Hi,

I recently bought a second-hand fluval external filter which has been used
for four or five months on a marine tank, and as a result has a degree of
salt crusting on the interior, baskets, pipework etc. My plan was to
soak the lot in a warm bath and give it a scrub and a good rinse - will this
be sufficient to shift the salt?

I've also got the (used) media, which I'm assuming will be too difficult to
clean effectively, unless someone can advise me differently :o)

Thanks in advance,
A.

I used to swap and change filters around depending o what I was keeping at
the time. The sponges just need a good rinse out and I used to use Siporax
which I soaked in boiling water and allowed to cool before re- using it.
Don't go too overboard with the scrubbing to remove salt as it can be
beneficial in a freshwater aquarium. The first time you use it, the salt
will enter the system, but to be honest, the amount will be negligible and
once you start water changing, it will dilute itself out of concentration.

Regards
