If I may I'd like to comment as follows:
What you are saying is common to most of us aquarists - We want a "LFS".
(Local Fish Shop)
Having kept freshwater tropicals now for near on 40 years and having lived
in NW London area for this period I can say that I have seen so many LFS's
come and go that I couldn't count them all if I tried.
I consider that, by and large we aquarists have only ourselves to blame for
the closure of a great many LFS's.
We are all too happy to visit our LFS, look through the tanks of fish and
buy the fish we desire.
We then return home and then later go buy our dry goods, foods, power
filters etc from either mail order or on-line discount suppliers.
The reality is however that the profit on selling fish is comparatively poor
and that LFS's depend on sales of dry goods to maintain their businesses as
viable.
Yes, I'd be the 1st to agree that occasionally some LFS's seem to want those
"too" high profit levels on dry goods and their prices are totally OTT.
On the other hand you should perhaps ask yourself if these prices are set
because the business is struggling and needs the margins to continue
existence or are they just being a bit greedy?.
All I can suggest is that if you are fortunate enough to have a half decent
LFS then do your best to support them and keep them there.
Be willing to pay a bit over the odds for the dry goods you need and in so
doing support your LFS.
It would be a sad day indeed if all LFS's went and we aquarist's we all
forced to buy our pets unseen from remote sources.
