I've had about 4 silver sharks since they were specks in about 2002.
They've lived reasonably happily together and yet over the last two days
two have fought to the death. I knew they were chasing each other about
in rather a serious way, but I didn't dream it would go so far. When I
got up this morning the biggest was dead and his assailant looked in a
very bad way. Tonight I came home and found him dead.

I've had Angel Fish & Oscar's go into what I'd call "Last Man Standing"
mode, but this behaviour by placid Silver Sharks is a new one. The other
fish are quite subdued and keeping in the weeds.

Could be overcrowding or they have simply grown to large for the
space.

To keep silver sharks you need a large tank so that each shark can
mark out its own territory. Sadly many are sold in shops with the
comment that they are not territorial, they are. The aggression can
also be triggered if a male is seeking to spawn with a female, if
there is simply not enough room for it to have a large clear
territory, it will start to make one by fighting with the other
sharks, if they have no room to retreat, then death is the outcome.

It pays to do research into the behaviour of fish and not take the
work of shopkeepers or even some aquarium books.

They are in their bright new home. A 6 foot tank in the hall just for
them. I had a real soul search about a year ago about the expense, as I
could see me getting it all installed and the devils pegging out on me
:-)

The remaining Silver Sharks seem back to their old selves today, so I'm
hoping they'll go back to being placid gravel chompers.

It was a fairly well planted tank but today I put in more plants to give
them areas to be alone if they need it. There are rock caves and other
places to escape to, but I think these two just wanted to go all
"psycho" with each other.

Incidentally when I was in the shop getting the plants the assistant was
selling 4 silver sharks and 6 tiger barbs to a newbie fish keeper with a
3 foot tank. "They'll be fine" said the assistant..... arrghh !!

I hate how many times I have heard assistants saying that Tiger Barbs
are fine for a community tank. If it is a tank of oscars then maybe
:)
