Hello everyone,

I have discovered some snails in my aquarium.

I had some a couple of years ago which must have come with some plants I
bought. I let them be, and they multiplied and multiplied until the tank
was covered in them killing my fish (assuming down to bad water quality, or
perhaps parasites - I don't know!)

Anyway, I have discovered a few small ones which again, must have come from
some plants I bought. I have bought some snail treatment which warns that
it may be toxic to fish! I am loath to put this stuff in if there is a
chance I will unnecessarily kill my fish.

I am quite happy for them to be in there so long as they don't wipe out my
fish.

If anyone can offer any advice, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Do you have room for any Loaches? Clowns seem to be the best at tackling
the snails - I don't get a single snail in the tank were I keep the
Clowns....I've got some Yoyo loaches in another tank and am hoping that
these will also keep the snail population down

If you don't have room for any more fish then maybe try putting a
lettuce leaf in the tank overnight and then remove any snails that have
attached themselves. I also spotted a snail catching gizmo in the LFS
(one of the Maidenheads I use) today but didn't look too closely.

I'd probably avoid the chemicals especially if they say "toxic to fish"
- makes me a bit cross this - why is someone producing something for
aquariums that might kill the fish ???????? You are right to question it...

I don't think the snails would harm the fish but you can end up with
thousands so keeping a handle on them is a good idea.

Thanks for the suggestion - I like the sound of it! However, the tank I am
talking about is a BiOrb and I wonder if loaches would be OK considering the
substrate that's in there.

It's more the size that would be the concern...you can't keep one Clown
Loach (or any botia as far as I'm aware) as they are social fish that
love being around their own kind. You could maybe do some checking on
Loaches On Line to see if there is anything small enough but even
something like Yoyos would probably outgrow the tank very quickly....

If there isn't anything suitable for your tank (which I suspect there
won't be) try the lettuce trick

In addition to Clown loaches the Doradid group of catfish are good at eating
snails.
These can be kept solo.

Some stay fairly small. i.e. Amblydoras hancocki stays under 4 inches.

Have a look here:
http://www.scotcat.com/articles/article58.htm

Note also:
Some species do grow LARGE - Pseudodoras niger to 3 foot long.
So be careful what you buy.

Strongly suggest you avoid any chemical treatment.
