I just got back from a week away and before I went I dropped a Tetra
vacation tub in each tank.

I got back and the fish are fine, and the tank looks well scavenged :-)
But I noticed the stuff in the tub hasn't dissolved. It looks fairly
colourless and the fish don't look starved, but I expected to find empty
tubs.

Is this how they operate ?

a stint of a week without food is not a problem for any healthy and
fit fish. Even 10 day or two weeks is not a problem, and there is no
reason any of them should show signs of being emaciated. If a tank
does not have any live plants it helps to turn off or reduce the
lighting schedule as well. The makers of the tubs and blocks would
like to have you think otherwise however.

Normally I'd agree, but I have some very tiny babies in the tank. They
all survived the week with no problems.
