Just out of curiosity, why would you want tufa? It absorbs nitrate like a
sponge until saturated when it will leach back into the aquarium where it
could cause problems. Do you want to use it for pH buffering? If so, a small
bag of coral sand in the filter or in the water flow will help.

Yes, I want it for pH buffering
I can't even get coral gravel here.

As for the nitrate:
Luckily for me, my three tanks are heavily planted, so what little nitrate
there is (usually about 5-10) is absorbed by them.

Cuttlefish bone, as sold for cage birds, is a better buffer. Just put a
piece in your filter or hide it in the tank.
